Teaching America (to foreigners) in the time of Black Oppression…

I’m not feeling America right now. I haven’t been for a while. I’ve been teaching lessons on America, via English lessons to a student in China. It’s a whole unit about American culture. Which is all fine and good, I guess. I have some concerns about how they portray certain aspects of American culture—like how often we play football. But that is trivial compared to what is really bothering me. My student is very bright and advanced for her level and I need to give her more information then what is laid out before me to teach. I often use supplementary digital props that contain images of the American Flag…

To the Black People Who Agree with Candice Owens

You are a victim of white supremacy. I saw Candice Owens’s video. I didn’t know who this woman was and had to look her up. Apparently people care what she says, and she’s well-known enough to have a blue check mark next to her name. She is, and you too if you agree with her, are victims of the white supremacist narrative and don’t realize it. Here’s why. You think the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement is making a martyr of George Floyd. Why is that? Who said it? Have you heard any community activists say this? What is a martyr exactly? You’re smart. You’re educated. A martyr is someone…

Stop complaining about Black people getting shot and killed and do something.

Since Trayvon Martin was killed in 2012, I've done very little. I've sat in front of my keyboard writing. Murder after murder, by police and by civilians, my actions have hardly changed. I've talked to my husband about what is happening, what I think we can do. But I haven't taken direct action. I haven't called any politicians. I haven't marched, protested—shucks, I don't even think I've made my own post on social media. Maybe I've signed an online petition or two. But the reality is, two things cause tangible change in this country: violence and money. I'm a pacifist so my only option is using money. But I…

Are creative projects started before COVID-19 still relevant?

I started writing my book 7 years ago. I concocted a fake virus that would kill off most of the American population to create a situation in which white people would be the minority. Now, obviously none of that is happening exactly like that, but here we are amid a pandemic with the potential to kill hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans and people across the globe. I just wrote up a book summary to send to a potential editor. All I could think was, dang, elements of my book has come to life in the real world. How can I possibly market and sell a book about…

Dear Fellow Black Americans: Please do not fall for this Mike Bloomberg character.

He’s Trump’s political twin with a donkey sticker on his a**. I see ad after ad of “stop-and-frisk” Bloomberg with Black faces endorsing him. The ads say all the “right” things, but it is nothing more than pandering. Look at this man’s record, please. Look at the racist things he’s said and done—the misogynistic things he’s done, the lawsuits. Don’t vote for this man because you think he can “beat,” Trump. Don’t feel so desperate that you end up replacing one capitalist megalomaniac with another. One doesn’t make change—real change—by voting for the lesser of two evils. Just because you think he can defeat Trump doesn’t make him better for…

Eight ways America is like a dystopian novel

Information is controlled by corporate media to maintain the status quo. Algorithms anyone? Those algorithms curate the content we see online. Same news stories on repeat on every channel. We are told what to think and we comply. For instance, most people identify as Democrat or Republican. In a country of 325 million people, why do only two political parties dominate? Alternative viewpoints and smaller political parties have existed for generations, but are continually suppressed. Leaders of organizations and individuals who question the status quo complain of having their websites and social media posts suppressed by algorithms. Are the good people I follow on social media all paranoid that their…

Why Trump May Get A Third (and Fourth) Term

I’m a sucker for dystopian fiction. Books with governments with crazy leaders, ridiculous laws– laws that might have been once well-intentioned, but have gone awry like a robot that knows no reason. I enjoy reading about the teenage protagonists that manage to overthrow these monstrosities– the regimes always do the most damage to the youth in these fictional societies. (I love Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series and The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins) But when I see something horrific unfolding in real life, it’s a different story. It isn’t a story, actually. As you can probably tell by now, I am not a fan of Donald Trump. Nor are most…
